OID History
OID experts may notice that 1.3.6 was originally assigned to the US Department of Defense. In 1988, the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and Internet Assigned Numbers Authority issued RFC 1065, taking over 1.3.6.1 without official blessing or disapproval. They started using this as the root for various Internet purposes. For example, 1.3.6.1.6 is the root for official SNMP OIDs.
The IANA created a registry for enterprises and organizations that is kept at http://www.iana.org/assignments/enterprise-numbers. IHE obtained its OID root from IANA.
Many years later the DoD started using OIDs for official DoD purposes. These OIDs are all rooted at 2.16.840.1.101.
