Status/Discussion:

On Monday, May 2, Roger Kittelson added the following (via email in advance of the meeting) to the discussion at the last meeting:

I solicited input from the various people attended the showcase this year and in years past. This is a summary of what they have suggested.
1. Develop the PCD story from the aspect of functional groups that deal with medical devices and medical data:
a. Clinicians
b. Bio-medical
c. IT
d. Administration
The focus in each group being “How does this change my work flow? What is possible? What are the additional resources required? What resources are no longer needed?” The thought is that focusing on clinical stories drives the presentation towards clinicians and leaves out the other three groups. The thinking is the marketplace has moved beyond “is this something I need to be doing” to “how do I do this and what exactly is that I can be doing?”
2. Another suggestion was to have the showcase more centrally located. Not sure how much if any control PCD has on the location. Also that the tours / presentations schedule be re-evaluated. The comment was that there was too much crammed into some time-slots. I was not sure if this can be addressed. If there is a lot to see, and a person has limited time, then clearly the person will not be able to see everything.
3. On the structural design, my thought is the solution probably needs to be able to provide the maximum wall space per square floor footage. While I like the idea of a linear design from the story flow perspective, the current “cube” structure with wings I think does provide more wall space per sq. foot. ( I do want to emphasize the “I think” I have not done the math). The current structure also allows for expansion via the use of wings, and winglets, where the linear structure I would think would lock the demonstration into specific footprint.

Discussion continued:

Roger led with a description of his email (copied below). He noted the conflict between footprint and optimum layout. Scott added that we should focus on connectivity and workflow. E.g., PIV did this. Devices feeding the EMR, Alarm Management (with mention of alarm fatigue), futures/etc. would flesh out the four walls. Manny noted that Christel Anderson on Friday last week indicated that a survey of clinical informatics members revealed that they perceive PCD as focused on messages and transactions while they need to see workflow emphasized. This supports the direction Roger and Scott are suggesting.
With IDCO and perhaps other profile additions, a second, small structure may be required to accommodate all profiles and vendors.
Those present believe this is the approach HIMSS and PCD should take with the primary structure. For clinical ties to other domains, clinical environments, Continua, selected PCD devices and systems can be located at those kiosk groupings. Those groupings can be adjacent to the PCD structure.

Additionally, the PCD would like to discuss placement of the PCD structure within the Showcase.

Sometime in the future, the WG may wish to consider Future: How to encourage people to come to the showcase from the exhibit hall.
