HIMSS 2014 IHE Educational Proposals


2014 Proposal Topics & Leads)

  • IHE Standards and Implementation: Working with Clinicians, Public Health Officials (Anna Orlova, Mick Talley, John Stamm)
  • Medical Device Integration (MDI) and its use in support of Syndromic Surveillance in Medical / Surgical units and ICUs (John Zaleski)

PROPOSAL OPTIONS - PRESENTATION FORMATS & REQUIREMENTS

Lectures 60 minute lecture type conference, a specific topic is presented and discussed. An assigned HIMSS moderator introduces the speakers, and the presentation is followed by a brief question and answer period. No more than 2 speakers are permitted. Potential Topic: Case Study on an approved profile in the field, how it’s improved workflow or existing product


Roundtables A 60 minute, interactive discussion with attendees about a certain issue. This is an opportunity for attendees with a common interest/concern regarding a specific subject to discuss that subject with peers. Facilitator offers a 10 minute presentation in which the issue/subject is framed for the group of attendees and then will guide the discussion with prepared questions. Facilitator will allow 5 minutes to summarize key findings, suggestions, and points.


E-sessions A 20 minute electronic presentation (powerpoint) – HIMSS provides professional voice over to add audio to powerpoint. There is no live presentation, only 1 author is listed as the primary author will recieve complimentary registration. E-sessions require a script of the presentation to be developed.

PRESENTATION LEVELS

Introductory: Provides a broad-based overview of a topic

Intermediate: Audience will have knowledge or skill of someone who is more advanced than a beginner. Goal of presentation is the application of learning to effectively use a system, synthesize and collect data for the next step of analysis and application

Advanced: Audience is mature in course of progress of development, goal of presentation is the application of data and lessons learned to derive new information and leverage tools for optimal use.


SPEAKER REQUIREMENTS • No more than 2 speakers per session

• The Annual Conference Education Committee will select no more than 2 proposals from any given organization. E-sessions are not included in this count

• Additional/substitute speakers are not automatically allowed.

• Speakers are required to participate in a speaker orientation webinar

• It is up to the discretion of HIMSS to make changes to any areas of submitted proposals as necessary

• Speakers will be assigned to a HIMSS Reviewer

• Speakers must register for the conference. Authors of E-Sessions will receive complimentary HIMSS conference registration. HIMSS does not pay for lodging/travel expenses.


PROPOSAL FORM REQUIREMENTS

Learning Objectives

•Description of Learning Objectives – All learning objectives need to start with active verbs and define operational behavioral objectives, if the appropriate verbs are not used, the learning objectives will not be accepted.

•Each proposal requires 3 – 5 one sentence learning objectives


Presentation Description

• Background information on topic, such as how the problem/issue was identified, approach used to address problem or issue, challenges and barriers faced, method analysis that was used, conclusion or outcomes achieved and reccomendations that you would offer.

•Roundtable Discussion:

Include details on how group discussion will be facilitated with 200 attendees.

• Identify sources of your data.

• Speakers need to include bio of professional background, public speaking experience and a 75 word introduction.

• Provide 2 Multiple choice questions and 1 True/False question that attendees should be able to answer after attending this presentation. Provide a 1000 word description, of further background on presentation topic. Include, for example, how the problem/issue was identified; the approach used to address the problem or issue; the challenges and barriers faced; the method analysis that was used; the conclusion or outcomes achieved and the recommendation(s) that you would offer.

PROPOSAL EVALUATION QUESTIONS

The questions below have been developed to help guide your topics and develop your presentation material.

• Does abstract contain information that attendees want to hear?

• Is there significant value to attendees?

•Is it relevant to current topics affecting healthcare?

• What are the practical applications?

• What is the reasoning and documentation to support your conclusions, recommendations and outcomes?

• Does this presentation advance existing idea or present new idea?

• Will this presentation expand the participant’s knowledge of technologies?

• Does proposal guidelines or models to manage attedee’s own implementations or applications?

• Will presentation be up to date, cutting edte at the time of presentation in 6-9 months?

• Will topic have implementations in the future?

• How relevant is the topic in context of pending legislation, regulations and technology?

• Does presentation document pre and post process or system changes? • Does information validate data?

• Does presenter attest to accuracy of data as part of proposal submission?

• Are conclusions supported with data? Ex.: Have cost savings or increases been documented?

• Has the proposal been implemented with comparative results available?

•Does the presentation include a user perspective?

• Does presentation identify sources of information, benchmark data, or examples from multiple sources?

• Does the presentation avoid commercial content?

• Does presentation illustrate reality vs hype? Positive and negative attributes, problems encountered but not often discussed, realistic expecations for operational use? Attendees are searching for guidelines and models to simplify or manage their own application or installation.
