IHE Quality Domain addresses the infrastructure necessary to share information relevant to quality improvement in electronic patient care and health care records.

It is sponsored by the American Heart Association (AHA), American College of Cardiology (ACC), and Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) and manages the Quality Profiles and the Quality Technical Framework.

There are two committees:

Current Activity

The Quality Domain is currently focused on the workflow cycle of quality measurement. The cycle begins with a quality measure defintion that can be incorporated into the EHR for concurrent management and measurement of the required processes and outcomes for patients meeting cohort criteria for the clinical concern, and capture of the patient-level clinical data for measurement of performance with respect to the measure by clinical care providers and organizational providers. The workflow is defined in the Quality Domain framework, currently being refined from the 2007 work to define the Patient Level Export of Quality Data. The 2008 work effort is to define profiles for the quality measure itself in concert with measure developers and for the patient level export of such quality data for aggregation and analysis. The Quality Domain is seeking technical volunteers for assitance in completing these profile. If you would like to participate, contact the Quality Planning Committee or the Quality Technical Committee.

IHE Quality Domain: A Call for Participation

Outreach to Clinician Communities to Discuss How to Incorporate Quality Guidelines into Electronic Health Record Interoperability

There is ongoing work in several parts of the healthcare community today to incorporate quality guidelines into clinical workflow. To support and coordinate these efforts, the American College of Cardiology (ACC), the American Heart Association (AHA), the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), and the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) have joined together to sponsor and launch the IHE Quality domain. Its mission is to address the infrastructure necessary to share information relevant to quality improvement in electronic patient care and health care records.

The sponsoring organizations held a Web seminar to introduce the initiative and share general information with organizations and individuals interested in participating on Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2007. An introductory presentation on the Quality domain is available for download here.

The domain kickoff meeting took place April 11-12 at the Four Points Sheraton, Chicago-O'Hare. The meeting focused on developing use cases to provide the basis for a Technical Framework to enable sharing of quality guidelines in electronic health record (EHR) applications and related systems.

The IHE Quality domain committee met November 5 & 6th at RSNA Headquarters in Oak Brook, IL and discussed proposals for 2008 highlighted on this site. Resolution of the Planning Committee and schedule for further meetings through 2008 are also updated on this site.

January 8 - 10, 2008 there will be a joint Quality Planning and Technical Committee meeting to update the Quality Framework and also to tentatively prepare proposals for HL7 standard submission. The Planning Committee will be handing off the proposed quality profiles to the Technical Committee through a series of telephone conferences. Invitations to those teleconferences will be sent to committee members (next is Thursday, November 15, 2007).
