Scope

The developement of the 3D/4D Echo Whitepaper consist of two major work items:

  • Develop clinical use cases for the use of 3D/4D Echo togehter with clincal members of the planning committee, focussing on workflow aspects like the handoff between Sonographer and Cardiologist
  • Work with DICOM Committees (especially W12 - Ultrasound and WG11 - Display) in order to work on missing but in the context of 3D/4D Echo necessary functionality from the DICOM side:
    • 3D Presentation State
    • Support for 3D measurement in the Echocardiography SR templates (TID 5200 und 5300)

The plan is to develop the whitepaper during the 2009/2010 development cycle. This whitepaper will then be the foundation for developing the actual supplement during 2010/2011.

Target Milestones

  • Coordination with WG12/WG11
    • Dec. 2009: Coordination with DICOM WG12
    • Feb. 2010: Joint meeting with WG11 to discuss X3D approach for presentation states.
  • White Paper:
    • End Dec 2009: agreed list of use cases
    • End Feb 2010: workflow definition and clarification with clincal users
    • Mid March 2010: Finalize draft use case document
    • Mid April 2010: Clinical reviews
    • End April 2010: White paper ready for review in technical committee

Highlights/ Accomplishments

  • WG12 started discussing WG11's proposal for a nD presentation state. WG11 plans to use the X3D file format and build the presentation state based on that. Within WG12 we are uncertain how well this approach meets US needs. WG12 proposes to meet WG11 during their February meeting.
  • Internal discussion on list of use cases has started

Risks/ Concerns

  • Timeline to finalize supplement on 3D presentation states ready in time for a 3D/4D Echo supplement in 2011.
  • Approach of WG11 to use X3D as a basis for a presentation state supplement needs to be evaluated further.

Next Steps

  • Develop a template for a use case document
  • Draft a list of clinical use cases and open questions regarding these use cases
  • Confirm use cases with clincal users
