MSH-10 Message Control Id

(original paragraph broken out into individual propositions)

  1. Definition:

1. This field contains a number or other identifier that uniquely identifies the message.

2. Each message should be given a unique identifier by the sending system.

3. The receiving system shall echo this ID back to the sending system in the Message Acknowledgment segment (MSA).

4. The combination of this identifier and the name of the sending application (MSH-3) shall be unique across the Healthcare Enterprise.

Implications:

Sending system must not repeat sequence after restart.
