The following workflow shows the process of an endoscopy examination that includes ordering, endoscopy procedure and finally submits observation report. Endoscopy is scheduled on the order that Order Placer generates and the information that is required to make a pathology order is sent from Report Creator to Order Placer on the completion of the observation report. Upon the completion of the observation report, the Report Creator provides the observation report to the Order Placer. Then the Order Filler identifies the Exam End when it receives the task completion notification from the Report Creator.

The Endoscopy Ordering Workflow Profile specifies workflows where gastroenterological endoscopy is ordered from hospital information system located outside of the endoscopy department and the result of gastrointestinal endoscopy notified to the system.

Summary

The Endoscopy Ordering Workflow Profile specifies workflows where gastroenterological endoscopy is ordered from hospital information system located outside of the endoscopy department and the result of gastrointestinal endoscopy notified to the system.

Benefits

Reduce Errors and Enhance Patient Care

  • Prevents manual data entry errors by ensuring that a particular piece of data is entered only once.
  • Prevents delays in patient care by making relevant information available at the point of care.

Improve Throughput

  • Saves manual data entry time by ensuring that a particular piece of data is entered only once.

Reduce Deployment Cost/Time

  • Prevents custom interface specification time and expense.
  • Prevents custom interface implementation time and expense.
  • Reduces interface compliance testing time and expense.
  • Reduces intersystem testing time and expense.
  • Reduces custom interface maintenance time and expense by maintaining a single interface (IHE) instead of multiple custom interfaces.

Details

The Process Flow from an endoscopy order and execution to the performed procedure information notification is presented below. The Order Placer places an order to prepare the endoscopy. The Order Filler notifies the Order Placer of patient arrival after which changes of order by the Order Placer are prohibited. Upon the completion of the performed data entry, the Performed Procedure Reporter notifies the Order Placer of the performed procedure information. Then the Order Filler identifies the Exam End when it receives the task completion notification from the Performed Procedure Reporter.

Systems Affected

Systems involved in this profile are:

  • Enterprise-wide information systems that manage patient registration and services ordering (i.e., registration system and hospital information system (HIS))
  • Endoscopy departmental information systems that manage department scheduling (i.e., Endoscopy information system (EIS))
  • Performed Procedure Reporter (PPR) that notify of the performed procedure information. The PPR has been defined as an independent actor, because in actual system, various products may implement the role of PPR that generates performed procedure information and informs OP of it.
