MESA Radiology

The MESA software from the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology was originally designed to test the IHE Radiology profiles. This page contains information about the MESA tools that are available for Radiology.

Scheduled Workflow

Acquisition Modality

The tests for the Acquisition Modality actor are of the general form:

  • MESA software provides a modality worklist for the modality to query (MESA Order Filler)
  • Modality is expected to query the MESA Order Filler
  • Modality sends images to MESA Image Manager
  • Modality sends MPPS messages to MESA Image Manager or MESA Order Filler
  • Modality sends storage commit requests to Image Manager

After the modality sends the messages to the MESA simulators, the MESA software evaluates those messages. In general, the MESA software is testing:

  1. Did the modality perform the MPPS case as requested?
  2. Did the modality properly map values from the modality worklist to output images and MPPS messages.

Modality tests include:

  • Modality Test 201: Unscheduled Case
  • Modality Test 211: Simple Case, One SPS
  • Modality Test 213: Simple Case, Two SPS
  • Modality Test 214: Simple Case, Two SPS
  • Modality Test 215: Perform Different Procedure
  • Modality Test 216: Assisted Protocol, One SPS
  • Modality Test 218: Billing and Material Option
  • Modality Test 221: Group Case, One Scheduled Procedure
  • Modality Test 222: Group Case, Two Scheduled Procedure
  • Modality Test 231: Append Case
  • Modality Test 241: Abandoned Case
  • Modality Test 242: Exception Management
  • Modality Test 251: Storage Commitment Association Negotiation

ADT

In the tests of the ADT actor, the test cases define a set of events that should cause the ADT actor under test to transmit ADT messages. The MESA Order Filler and MESA Order Placer actors receive these messages, and the MESA software then evaluates them.

ADT tests include:

  • ADT Test 131: Administrative and Procedure Performance Process Flow
  • ADT Test 132: Order Change Flow Initiated by Order Filler
  • ADT Test 133: PIR Case 2: Unidentified Patient Registered at ADT and Ordered at Department System Scheduler/Order Filler

Image Display

In Scheduled Workflow, there are few requirements defined for the Image Display Actor. The MESA software loads a MESA Image Manager with images and tests are run that require the Image Display to send queries with various combinations of query keys (patient ID, accession number, ...). Furthermore, the Image Display actor is required to render some test images and record screen captures. Those screen captures require manual validation.

Image Manager

The MESA simulators for ADT, Order Placer, Order Filler and Acquisition Modality exchange messages to setup the test cases for Scheduled Workflow. As part of the message exchange, the Order Filler simulator sends HL7 scheduling messages to the Image Manager under test. After the scheduling messages are sent, the Acquisition Modality simulator sends images and MPPS messages to the Image Manager. The Image Manager is required to forward MPPS messages to the Order Filler simulator. Finally, a MESA Image Display simulator queries the Image Manager under test to confirm that the images were received and processed. Besides the ability to forward MPPS messages, the Image Manager has no further requirements in the context of MPPS messages.

Image Manager tests include:

  • Image Manager Test 103: PIR Case 1: Unidentified Patient Registered at ADT and Ordered at the Order Placer
  • Image Manager Test 105: PIR Case #3: Unidentified Patient Registered at ADT but Completed at Modality Prior to Order
  • Image Manager Test 106: Green
  • Image Manager Test 108: PGP Test Data
  • Image Manager Test 109: Exception Management
  • Image Manager Test 110: Billing and Material Option
  • Image Manager Test 111: Performed Work Status Update
  • Image Manager Test 131: Administrative and Procedure Performance Process Flow
  • Image Manager Test 132: Order Change Flow Initiated by Order Filler
  • Image Manager Test 133: PIR Case 2: Unidentified Patient Registered at ADT and Ordered at Department System Scheduler/Order Filler
  • Image Manager Test 134: Instance Availability Notification
  • Image Manager Test 401: Modalities in Study
  • Image Manager Test 402: Related Series/SOP Instances
  • Image Manager Test 403: Other Image Manager Attribute
  • Image Manager Test 404: Image Specific Queries
  • Image Manager Test 405: Storage Commitment

Order Filler

The MESA software sends a series of ADT messages and orders to the Order Filler. The Order Filler is required to use that information to create appropriate modality worklist items. The MESA modality queries the Order Filler under test for the expected worklist items. The MESA modality also sends MPPS messages to the Order Filler under test. After the simulators have completed the tasks of sending and receiving messages, the MESA software evaluates those messages sent by the Order Filler Under test.

Order Filler tests include:

  • Order Filler Test 100: MWL Queries
  • Order Filler Test 103: PIR Case 1: Unidentified Patient Registered at ADT and Ordered at the Order Placer
  • Order Filler Test 105: PIR Case #3: Unidentified Patient Registered at ADT but Completed at Modality Prior to Order
  • Order Filler Test 106: Green
  • Order Filler Test 107: Status Update
  • Order Filler Test 108: PGP Test Data
  • Order Filler Test 109: Exception Management
  • Order Filler Test 110: Billing and Material Option
  • Order Filler Test 111: Performed Work Status Update
  • Order Filler Test 112: MWL Issuer of Patient ID
  • Order Filler Test 131: Administrative and Procedure Performance Process Flow
  • Order Filler Test 132: Order Change Flow Initiated by Order Filler
  • Order Filler Test 133: PIR Case 2: Unidentified Patient Registered at ADT and Ordered at Department System Scheduler/Order Filler

Order Placer

In the Order Placer tests, the MESA ADT simulator sends ADT messages to the Order Placer. The MESA Order Filler also sends order messages for those cases where the exam is ordered in the department. The Order Placer under test sends order messages to the MESA Order Filler. Those messages are evaluated for structure and to make sure that the Order Placer carried the ADT information forward into the ORM.

Order Placer tests include:

  • Order Placer Test 103: Unidentified Patient Registered at ADT and Ordered at the Order Placer
  • Order Placer Test 104: Green
  • Order Placer Test 105: PIR Case #3: Unidentified Patient Registered at ADT but Completed at Modality Prior to Order
  • Order Placer Test 107: Status Update
  • Order Placer Test 131: Administrative and Procedure Performance Process Flow
  • Order Placer Test 132: Order Change Flow Initiated by Order Filler
  • Order Filler Test 151: Appointment Notification – New Bookings
  • Order Filler Test 152: Appointment Notification – Reschedule Bookings
  • Order Filler Test 153: Appointment Notification – Cancel Bookings
