Roadmap

2006 - IHE Eye Care Year 1 - Focus is to initiate IHE Eye Care, building upon basic profiles of workflow, charge posting and evidence reports and begin introducing this to the vendor and user community.

2007 - IHE Eye Care Year 2 - Focus is on building upon the beginning efforts and expand participation of vendors, particularly acquisition modalities. One new profile was added, Eye Care Displayable Reports, to enhance the usability to users.

2008 - IHE Eye Care Year 3 - Focus is on expanding participation of vendors, particularly electronic health record systems, to build critical mass in IHE Eye Care and building up physician/user understanding of the needs for IHE/interoperability

2009 - IHE Eye Care Year 4 - Focus is on expanding participation of vendors and building upon the awareness/education of the physicians and by expanding usage of IHE Eye Care by extending the Framework to include a new actor, Legacy Acquisition Modality Importer, which allows physicians to use their existing devices, instead of having to purchase new devices.

2010 - IHE Eye Care Year 5 - Focus is on continuing to expand participation of vendors, both acquisition modality vendors, legacy acquisition modalities, and electronic health record systems to reach a critical mass. Work in future years will be to build in more Information Technology Infrastructure profiles into the Technical Framework.

2011 - IHE Eye Care Year 6 - Focus is on continuing to expand participation of vendors to reach a critical mass by developing a new supplement, Basic Eye Care Workflow. Also, work in future years will build Eye Care specific CDA templates.

2012 - IHE Eye Care Year 7 - Focus is on continuing to expand participation of vendors, both acquisition modalities and electronic health record systems with Basic Eye Care Workflow and to expand participation of clinicians. The focus will be on subspecialty specific CDA templates, beginning with Cataract Surgery.

Eye Care Strategic Planning

This documents the activities of the Eye Care domain in doing strategic planning.

The IHE Eye Care Planning Committee met at a face-to-face meeting on October 21, 2011, Orlando, to discuss strategic plans and priorities for the next 3-5 years. The IHE EC PC has defined the following priorities for the years 2012-2016:

I. Clinical Document Architecture Profiles for different areas of eye care:

  • A. Cataract surgery
  • B. Glaucoma
  • C. Age-Related Macular Degeneration
  • D. Diabetic Retinopathy

II. Education and promotional efforts to enhance the uptake and implementation of IHE Eye Care

Existing profiles will be evaluated and maintained, but the priority in future years will be on content profiles.

The IHE EC PC believed that the most fruitful areas for cross-domain liaison would be with Patient Care Coordination because their experience with CDA profiles.

Current Activity

IHE Eye Care has been working on CDA Templates. The Trial Implementation Version for the General Eye Evaluation was published in summer 2012 and available here under Technical Frameworks. Correction Proposals are accepted by the Technical Committee for consideration.

The Technical Committee is also working on a Cataract Surgery CDA Template. Comments are accepted by the Technical Committee for consideration.
