These are the IHE work items that leverage HL7® FHIR. FHIR® – Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources – is a next generation standards framework created by HL7, leveraging the latest web standards and applying a tight focus on implementability. An introduction summary available from HL7 on FHIR http://hl7.org/fhir/STU3/summary.html.

Whenever possible, IHE profiles are based on established and stable underlying standards. However, if an IHE committee determines that an emerging standard offers significant benefits for the use cases it is attempting to address and has a high likelihood of industry adoption, it may develop IHE profiles and related specifications based on such a standard.

The IHE committee will take care to update and republish the IHE profile in question as the underlying standard evolves. Updates to the profile or its underlying standards may necessitate changes to product implementations and site deployments in order for them to remain interoperable and conformant with the profile in question. The IHE profile will not move to Final Text (Normative) until the underlying standard it utilizes moves to Normative. Prior to Normative both IHE Profiles and FHIR specification can change radically without recognition of backward compatibility.

The following Profiles (Or Technical Framework Supplement) use the emerging HL7 FHIR specification. The FHIR release profiled in these supplements are not final status. HL7 describes the STU (Standard for Trial Use) standardization state at https://www.hl7.org/fhir/versions.html. (Or equivalent statement about a different emerging standard.)

In addition, HL7 provides a rating of the maturity of FHIR content based on the FHIR Maturity Model (FMM): level 0 (draft) through 5 (normative ballot ready). The FHIR Maturity Model is described at http://hl7.org/fhir/versions.html#maturity.

ITI TF-2x: Appendix Z contains common guidance on use of HL7 FHIR to be used with all domains profiles of FHIR.

HL7 FHIR specification lists Profiles (Implementation Guides) on the Implementation Guide Registry. This page is manually edited today by John Moehrke as liaison between IHE and FHIR, the manual process will be eliminated with the use of the IG Publishing mechanics.

FHIR Conformance resources provide a technical specification of a Profile (Implementation Guide). IHE is working on using these, but at this time the FHIR conformance resources are not mature enough for the kind of detailed profiling that IHE needs. Each IHE Profile on FHIR is encouraged to provide these FHIR Conformance resources, they are provided as "Informative" and provided on the IHE FTP site. For more details on accessing these Resources see Implementation Material.
