|In thinking strategically of future work and profiles for IHE Lab and IHE AP, and in the spirit of further collaboration, the co-chairs from IHE AP, IHE Lab, and the IHE Lab/AP Secretariat, recommend a consolidation of the two working groups into one group.  We think a merger is beneficial  to both groups, as well as being a streamlined process that the Board of IHE International will appreciate.  We already are starting to see a merged effort through the  “Laboratory Device Automation” reengineering project that has software vendors involved from both domains. We anticipate the future will continue to see a blurring between the two domains and want to be positioned to best address emerging needs.  The new domain could be called the “ IHE  Pathology and Laboratory Medicine” domain or something similar to reflect all aspects of the laboratory.  We also suggest that all co-chairs be retained to assist in leading discussions focused on one area or another and to continue on work already in progress.

Special Announcement
WARNING: As of January 4, 2016 this page is deprecated and superseded by the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (PaLM) domain page

Introduction

IHE Anatomic Pathology addresses information sharing, workflow and patient care in anatomic pathology, which includes surgical pathology, cytopathology, autopsy, electron microscopy, molecular pathology.

Sponsors

IHE Anatomic Pathology is sponsored by the French Association for the Development of Informatics in Pathology (ADICAP), the College of American Pathologists (CAP), the Spanish Health Informatics Society (SEIS) and the Spanish Society of Anatomic Pathology (SEAP). It manages the Pathology Profiles and the Pathology Technical Framework.

Chairs

  • Planning Committee Co-chairs:
    • Dr Raj Dash, Duke University Health System, USA
    • Dr Thomas Schrader, Germany
  • Technical Committee Co-chairs:
    • Dr. Marcial García ROJO, SESCAM, Spain
    • Jacques Klossa, TRIBVN, France
  • Secretariat: Mary Kennedy (email: mkenned@cap.org)
  • Board Representative: Mary Kennedy, College of American Pathologists

Objective and Scope

The IHE Anatomic Pathology domain addresses collaborative work in Anatomic Pathology, based on the creation and sharing or exchange of electronic information, including data and images, during the complex workflow performed in an Anatomic Pathology department from specimen reception to report transmission, storage and analysis. The goal is a comprehensive electronic pathology record of the patient, of which images may be a significant part.

The diagnostic process in anatomic pathology differs from that in the clinical laboratory since it relies on image interpretation. It also differs from that in radiology since it is specimen-driven, and when digital imaging is performed, many types of imaging equipment (gross imaging, microscopic still imaging, whole slide imaging, multispectral imaging, etc.) may be involved for a single examination. Moreover, images of the same study may be related to different specimen (parts and/or slides) from one or even different patients (e.g., Tissue Micro Array [TMA]). Finally, slides are always available to acquire more images, if needed.

The primary focus is clinical patient management, but public health or research may also be addressed as appropriate (biobanking, TMA, etc.). The aim is to progressively include all sub-domains of anatomic pathology.

Strategic Plan

2011-2012 Profile Selection

  • Change proposal
    • Extending the scope of APSR (10 new document templates)

2012-2013 Profile Selection

  • Profile selection process

Proposals posted to anapath@ihe.net will be accepted through September 2012. The templates for both brief and detailed proposals are available on Profile_Proposal_Process. A brief proposal is acceptable for September submission. Selection of proposals to be developed as profiles in 2013 will be made in December 2012. A detailed proposal is required for December selection.

Future work

  • Sharing terminology/value sets/templates

Current Anatomic Pathology Profiles (in Final Text and Trial Implementation)

  • The new releases of the Anatomic Patholgy Technical Framework (PAT TF) and supplement(s) for trial implementation are available on the ihe.net web site :[1]
  • The new supplement(s)for public comment are available on the ihe.net web site :[2]

Anatomic Pathology (AP) Committees

Scheduled Meetings

Representatives with a Roster Status of Co-chair, Liaison, Voting (or possibly Alternate) may vote and count towards quorum. A - represents a missed meeting. Representatives with a Roster Status of Secretary or Non-voting or Observer may not vote or count towards quorum. A + represents an attended meeting. Voting privileges and attendance apply to IHE Member Organizations, so the list is sorted by Member Organization to facilitate this. The Cochairs are listed at the top.
