Research Matching specifies a method for publishing research process definitions to interested EHR systems to enable matching patients and investigators with appropriate clinical research studies.

Summary

Research Matching is one of a set of profiles that create interoperability between EHRs and specialized research systems, resulting in EHR-enabled research. Redaction extends the functionality of Clinical Research Process Content and Retrieve Process for Execution. Research Matching focuses on the early steps of research study identification. Processes specified are:

  • Finding relevant studies
  • Finding personalized studies
  • Reviewing eligibility criteria
  • Executing patient searches
  • Publishing protocols to subscribers

Benefits

EHRs and registries contain much of the information that is needed to identify appropriate subjects for clinical studies. Research Matching allows research sponsors to search EHRs, lead to better results and more efficient and cost effective studies. The automated method allows providers or patients to identify studies of interest to them, thereby increasing research participation. The ability for a research system to push a research protocol to an EHR results in a faster and cheaper method for sites to review candidate protocols.

Details

The RPE profile sets up actors which hold sections of the research protocol as executable instruction sets. The Process State Manager hands off the executable instructions to the Process Activity Executor, which abides in the EHR. Research Matching builds on these actors and transactions, and defines the specific processes to be executed. Through the Research Matching processes early study selection, matching, and review are automated.
