Past Development Cycles

Roadmap

2006 - IHE Eye Care Year 1 - Focus is to initiate IHE Eye Care, building upon basic profiles of workflow, charge posting and evidence reports and begin introducing this to the vendor and user community.

2007 - IHE Eye Care Year 2 - Focus is on building upon the beginning efforts and expand participation of vendors, particularly acquisition modalities. One new profile was added, Eye Care Displayable Reports, to enhance the usability to users.

2008 - IHE Eye Care Year 3 - Focus is on expanding participation of vendors, particularly electronic health record systems, to build critical mass in IHE Eye Care and building up physician/user understanding of the needs for IHE/interoperability

2009 - IHE Eye Care Year 4 - Focus is on expanding participation of vendors and building upon the awareness/education of the physicians and by expanding usage of IHE Eye Care by extending the Framework to include a new actor, Legacy Acquisition Modality Importer, which allows physicians to use their existing devices, instead of having to purchase new devices.

2010 - IHE Eye Care Year 5 - Focus is on continuing to expand participation of vendors, both acquisition modality vendors, legacy acquisition modalities, and electronic health record systems to reach a critical mass. Work in future years will be to build in more Information Technology Infrastructure profiles into the Technical Framework.

2011 - IHE Eye Care Year 6 - Focus is on continuing to expand participation of vendors to reach a critical mass by developing a new supplement, Basic Eye Care Workflow. Also, work in future years will build Eye Care specific CDA templates.

2012 - IHE Eye Care Year 7 - Focus is on continuing to expand participation of vendors, both acquisition modalities and electronic health record systems with Basic Eye Care Workflow and to expand participation of clinicians. The focus will be on subspecialty specific CDA templates, beginning with Cataract Surgery.

2013 - IHE Eye Care Year 8 - Focus is on continuing to expand participation of electronic health record systems with the Routine Eye Evaluation CDA, and with acquisition modalities for the Basic Eye Care Workflow. The focus will be on completing the sub specialty-specific Cataract Surgery CDA.

2014 - IHE Eye Care Year 9 - Focus is on continuing to expand participation of acquisition modalities for the Basic Eye Care Workflow, and a new supplement, Small Clinic Workflow. The focus will be on revising the Routine Eye Evaluation CDA to be aligned with the c-CDA specified in Meaningful Use provisions of the Medicare EHR Incentive Program. Eye Care Strategic Planning

This documents the activities of the Eye Care domain in doing strategic planning.

The IHE Eye Care Planning Committee met at a face-to-face meeting on October 21, 2011, Orlando, to discuss strategic plans and priorities for the next 3-5 years. The IHE EC PC has defined the following priorities for the years 2012-2016:

I. Clinical Document Architecture Profiles for different areas of eye care:

  • A. Cataract surgery
  • B. Glaucoma
  • C. Age-Related Macular Degeneration
  • D. Diabetic Retinopathy

II. Education and promotional efforts to enhance the uptake and implementation of IHE Eye Care

Existing profiles will be evaluated and maintained, but the priority in future years will be on content profiles.

The IHE EC PC believed that the most fruitful areas for cross-domain liaison would be with Patient Care Coordination because their experience with CDA profiles.

2015 - IHE Eye Care Year 10 - Focus is on continuing to expand participation of acquisition modalities for the Basic Eye Care Workflow, and a new supplement to harmonize the different eye care workflows, called Unified Eye Care Workflow (U-EYECARE). Another focus will be to create a C-CDA Based Eye Care Patient Summary Record (EC-PatSum)

2016 - IHE Eye Care Year 11 - Add refractive measurements to U-EYECARE based upon JOIA XML data specification. Process CPs based upon connectathon and implementation feedback to U-EYECARE, GEE and EC-PatSum. Release U-EYECARE and CPs for Final Text. Consider the impact of FHIR on IHE Eye Care.

Current Activity

IHE Eye Care has combined the various eye care workflows into the profile named Unified Eye Care Workflow (U-EYECARE). U-EYECARE profile takes the best features of previously defined eye care workflows, combines them into one workflow profile and provides more flexibility for real world implementation models for systems such as EHRs and PACS. This profile is being updated to Final Text based upon 2015 Connectathon testing feedback.

Release new Final Text versions for volumes 1 and 2. Final Text will include U-EYECARE, incorporate change proposals (CPs) and also retire previous defined eye care workflow profiles.

Adding a new supplement to incorporate refractive devices into U-EYECARE based upon the JOIA specification. This supplement facilities the incorporation of refractive measurements in EHR systems via a XML-based data stream.

3rd Qtr. - Begin working on cataract C-CDA content profiles.

Plans are being made for the approved 2016 IHE Eye Care Connectathon, which will be held on October 10-13, 2016 at the RSNA headquarters in Oak Brook, Illinois.
